The following hospital and/or health system job eliminations were announced or implemented in the last three weeks. They are listed by the number of employees or positions affected.
1. Via Christi Health to Cut Workforce 4%
Wichita, Kan.-based Via Christi Health announced plans to cut 4 percent of its workforce, or 350 to 400 positions, by the end of June. The reductions will be achieved through layoffs and eliminating some vacant positions. The system pointed to lower patient volumes as the reason for the cuts.
2. Ministry Health Care in Wisconsin Announces Layoffs
Milwaukee-based Ministry Health Care plans to cut between 225 and 250 full-time equivalents across the entire system. The cuts will be achieved through layoffs and attrition. System leaders attributed the workforce reduction to decreased demand for physician and outpatient services and cuts from the federal sequester.
3. Dignity Health to Lay Off 148 Lab Workers
Dignity Health in San Francisco will lay off 148 lab workers from 18 lab sites in June. Dignity Health agreed to sell its clinical outreach labs to Quest Diagnostics in April, and the deal is set to finalize in June. It is possible that the affected employees could start to work for Quest Diagnostics or find work elsewhere in the Dignity Health system.
4. Greater Hudson Valley Health System Slashes 140 Positions
Middletown, N.Y.-based Greater Hudson Valley Health System is laying off the equivalent of 140 full-time positions from two hospitals. Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown will see the equivalent of 80 full-time positions cut, and Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, N.Y., will lay off the equivalent of 60 full-time workers. Combined, the cut positions account for 5 percent of GHVHS' total workforce.
5. Liberty Hospital in Missouri Axes 129 Positions
Liberty (Mo.) Hospital is eliminating 129 staff positions and making other cuts to reduce its expenses by $20 million. In addition to the layoffs, the hospital is closing its wound clinic and will stop the hospital-funded patient transportation program.
6. Lifespan Clips 107 Jobs
Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan is cutting 107 positions through layoffs and the elimination of empty positions. About two-thirds of the 107 eliminated positions were empty, and the rest were cut through management and staff layoffs.
7. UPMC to Cut 100 Transcriber Jobs
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is outsourcing its transcription services, resulting in about 100 layoffs at the end of June. However, all of the affected workers were offered positions at Nuance Communications, a software company based in Burlington, Mass., that offers transcription services.
8. Community Medical Center in New Jersey Lays Off 68
Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J., eliminated 85 positions, leading to 68 layoffs. Management, administrative and clinical positions were all affected by the cuts.
9. Roseland Community Hospital Lays Off 68
Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago laid off 68 employees. The layoffs affected lab and radiology clerks, secretaries, managers and emergency room nurses. In addition to the layoffs, 47 other employees will take a furlough day every two weeks.
10. Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York Lays Off Dozens
Dunkirk, N.Y.-based Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York laid off at least 40 employees from its Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving and Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk. The layoffs are expected to match staffing levels to patient volume, according to the report.
11. Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in Washington to Axe 19 Positions
Yakima (Wash.) Valley Memorial Hospital plans to lay off 19 workers at the end of May. Employees at the hospital's rehabilitation center, The Springs, are being let go because the hospital will cease to offer occupational and physical therapy.
12. McCready Memorial Hospital Lays Off 18
The McCready Foundation in Crisfield, Md., the parent of McCready Memorial Hospital, laid off 18 employees from the hospital and its Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home. Five additional employees were transitioned from full- to part-time status. Of the laid off employees, seven treated patients, seven more were clerical workers and four were in management.

Lorain, Ohio-based Mercy Regional Medical Center will lay off 18 employees in the next month. The layoffs come after the hospital eliminated job openings, started voluntary time-off programs and cut spending on services and supplies.
14. St. Mary's Health in Indiana to Trim Jobs by July
Evansville, Ind.-based St. Mary's Health will cut some of its staff members before July 1. The system does not know who or how many of its 3,600 employees will be let go.
15. St. Vincent Health Announces Layoffs
Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health will lay off employees across its 22-hospital system before July 1. St. Vincent did not reveal how many employees will be laid off as part of the cuts. The system employs roughly 18,000 people.

Bridgeport, Conn.-based St. Vincent's Medical Center officials have announced pending layoffs. The system did not give a specific number of affected employees, but did say the layoffs will be across all levels.
