Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago has laid off 68 employees, according to a CBS Chicago report.
The layoffs affected lab and radiology clerks, secretaries, managers and emergency room nurses, according to the report. In addition to the layoffs, 47 other employees will take a furlough day every two weeks.
The safety-net hospital serves a large population of uninsured patients, and it currently has about $7 million in outstanding bills. The layoffs and furloughs, combined with other cuts, are expected to save the hospital roughly $700,000 each month, according to the report.
Community advocates are requesting a $7 million bailout from the state to keep the hospital running without any major cuts in patient care services, according to the report.
