The following transactions, presented alphabetically, occurred within the past month.
1. Christ Hospital Acquires Breast Surgery Practice
The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati acquired the breast surgery physician practice of Jennifer Manders, MD. The transaction went into effect April 18. As part of this affiliation, The Christ Hospital will employ Dr. Manders and the employees of her practice, which will assume the new practice name The Christ Hospital Surgical Oncology Associates. Dr. Manders will maintain her current office location in Cincinnati.
2. Connecticut's Greenwich Hospital Enters JV With Surgeons for Ambulatory Surgery Center
Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital and Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists, also based in Greenwich, announced a joint-venture ambulatory surgery center agreement in late April. Under the agreement, surgeons from ONS will perform procedures at Greenwich Hospital's Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Ambulatory Surgical Center one day a week. The ASC, which features four ORs, will operate under the name Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Center of Greenwich.
3. Alabama's Helen Keller Hospital to Enter Surgery Center Joint Venture With Physicians
Keller Outpatient Surgery Pavilion in Tuscumbia, Ala., owned and operated by Helen Keller Hospital, is expected to become a hospital/physician joint venture ASC. KOSP will be majority owned by the hospital and physicians will have the opportunity to buy up to 49 percent of the ownership shares. Helen Keller Hospital still needs approval from the Alabama Certificate of Need board to change its ownership structure.
4. Indiana Health System Acquires Surgical Hospital, Converts it to Surgery Center
The Franciscan Alliance, a multi-state Catholic health system based in, Mishawaka, Ind., acquired the Surgical Hospital of Munster (Ind.) to serve as an ambulatory surgery center. The Franciscan Alliance, which includes 13 hospitals in Indiana and Illinois, acquired the surgical hospital April 14 as part of the health system's plan to become an accountable care organization. About 20 physicians will serve the new ASC.
5. Surgical Care Affiliates Enters Into Agreement With Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare in Louisville
In April, Surgical Care Affiliates entered a formal agreement with Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare, based in Louisville, Ky., for a partnership centering on ambulatory surgical services in the Louisville area. Under the agreement, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare acquired an interest in the general partnership that operates Surgecenter of Louisville and Premier Surgery Center, also in Louisville. The ASCs will be jointly owned by Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Healthcare, the surgery center’s physician partners and SCA. They will continue to be managed by SCA.
6. Sutter Health Acquires California Pacific Cardiovascular Medical Group
Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation — part of Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health — acquired San Francisco-based California Pacific Cardiovascular Medical Group in late April. The physicians will form SPMF's Cardiovascular Medicine Division and will also be a part of the Brown & Toland Physicians IPA.
7. Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Opens Joint Venture Surgery Center With Physicians
The Red Hills Surgical Center, a joint-venture ambulatory surgery center between Tallahassee (Fla.) Memorial Hospital and 35 local physicians, opened in mid-April. The ASC is a 17,000-square-foot multi-specialty facility with five operating rooms. The facility will be used by physicians representing four specialties including: otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, and obstetrics/gynecology.
8. Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Acquires Cardiology Practice in Tennessee
Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute in Nashville acquired South Central Heart Group, a five-physician practice in Columbia, Tenn., in early May. Under the acquisition, SCHG will become Vanderbilt Heart-Columbia. The practice was under Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, where Vanderbilt Heart has provided cardiovascular and thoracic surgery since 2007. As of May 1, the expanded relationship now includes interventional and non-interventional services.
