Several hefty donations have been made to hospitals and health systems in 2021 so far, going toward hospital improvements, new services, research and more.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health received a $30 million gift in honor of the late David Conlan, a patient who benefited from the hospital's rehabilitative medicine.

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is renaming one of its pavilions after Phil and Penny Knight, who have gifted more than $100 million to the Portland, Ore., hospital. 

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Wolfson Children's Hospital received a landmark gift from the Borowy Family Foundation, which will go toward its project for a $224 million critical care tower.

Target Chairman and CEO Brian Cornell and his wife, Martha Cornell, donated $10 million Oct. 20 to the Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Healthcare Foundation to create a new behavioral health facility.

Cape Cod Hospital received its biggest donation in history of $10 million from the Edwin Barbey Charitable Trust, which will go toward a new four-story tower for cancer and cardiology services, the Cape Cod Times reported Oct. 15.

September was a big month for donations to healthcare organizations, with eight gifts reported by Becker's Hospital Review. These gifts went to hospital improvements, new buildings and research.

Livingston, N.J.-based Saint Barnabas Medical Center received a $100 million donation from the Cooperman Family Foundation, prompting them to rename the hospital Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, according to a Sept. 30 press release emailed to Becker's.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham's medical school has been renamed after receiving a record-breaking $95 million gift.

Several healthcare organizations recently received donations to fund research, new facilities and patient care advancements.

University of California Irvine received a $30 million gift to support the creation of a 200,000-square-foot medical innovation building. 

The University of Massachusetts Amherst said Sept. 16 it received the largest gift in its history: $21.5 million to support its nursing school.

Boston Children's Hospital received a $20 million gift to advance pediatric heart disease research and treatment, the organization said Sept. 14.

Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health received a $350 million donation that will create a virtual care center to improve healthcare access in rural and underserved communities.

UMass Medical School will be renamed to honor a record-breaking $175 million donation, the Worcester, Mass.-based university said Sept. 7. 

Bozeman-based Montana State University received a $101 million donation to support its nursing school.

Nearly 40 hospitals and healthcare research organizations received gifts, pledges and bequests from individuals so far in 2021.

Maine Medical Center in Portland received the largest single donation in its 150-year history on June 15.
