6 recent donations to hospitals, med schools

Here are six recent examples of hospitals and medical schools receiving donations to build new facilities, advance research and improve medical education.

  1. New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian donated $20 million to Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., to help establish a new school of health sciences.

  2. The University of California San Diego received a $3.25 million donation from philanthropists Steven Strauss and Lise Wilson to establish the city's first cardiomyopathy center.

  3. Maine Medical Center in Portland received a $25 million donation from John and Leslie Malone, marking the largest single donation in its 150-year history. Funds will go toward capital projects, clinical education and modernization efforts.

  4. Western Michigan University received a $550 million donation from a group of anonymous alumni, marking the largest private gift ever given to a public university. The university's medical school will receive $300 million, which will be used to advance medical education, fund scholarships and support faculty expertise.

  5. University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City received a $110 million donation to advance research and patient care. The donation came from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and the Nora Eccles Treadwell Foundation.

  6. University of California Irvine Health received a $20 million gift to support its $1.2 billion hospital campus that will house a 144-bed acute care facility, ambulatory care center and cancer center. The donation came from the Chao family, which has contributed $50 million to the academic health system since 1995.
