ONC to Release Guide on Using Provider Directories for Secure Exchange by July

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT plans to establish a set of technical descriptions and guides for provider directories, which would be used in secure exchange of health information, by July, according to a Government Health IT news report.

The provider directories would be used to find digital certificates of healthcare providers, which confirm their identities in the electronic exchange of health information. The function for provider directories will likely be part of the stage 2 meaningful use recommendations brought forth by the advisory Health IT Policy and Standards committees, according to the news report.

There is not yet an electronic method for provider directories, and the ONC is seeking stakeholders to participate in an open-community "sprint team" that would help determine implementation specifications.
