Of 75 regional health information organizations that are fully operational in the U.S., only 13 are able to meet stage 1 meaningful use requirements, covering a mere 3 percent of hospitals and 0.9 percent of physician practices, according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
RHIOs are being established across the country to support health information exchanges, which allow hospitals and other healthcare providers to share critical patient information. Results from a survey showed of 197 potential RHIOs, only 75 were fully operational, and not a single RHIO fulfilled an expert-derived definition of a comprehensive RHIO. Researchers also found 50 RHIOs do not meet the criteria for financial viability.
