Telemedicine could be linked to clinician burnout, study says

Telemedicine can be less efficient than in-person care, potentially adding to clinician burnout, according to a July 28 analysis published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Researchers tracked after-work hours for 2,129 physicians at the New York City-based NYU Langone Health System and found that clinicians who delivered more virtual care spent more time working in their EHR system after their shifts ended.

The researchers concluded that telemedicine was associated with an increase in the after-hours work burden of physicians.

Researchers also found that this association was strongest after the initial acute phase of the pandemic passed and telemedicine became more normalized.
