The American Psychiatric Association recently stressed that prescribing medication to patients amid the increasing use of telemedicine requires a commitment to safety.
"As our field continues to lead in telehealth, psychiatrists must ensure that we continue to offer care that does not compromise safety, according to a July 22 blog post from the organization. "Innovation must be used to advance patient care rather than place it at risk."
The APA said although telepsychiatry expands coverage, safe and effective care are still top priorities. The post outlined health data security and appropriate consent for treatment as critical points for clinicians to focus on when prescribing medications, including controlled substances, through telehealth services.
