10 Recent Strategic Investments by Hospitals

Here are 10 strategic investments hospitals made in the past month and a half, beginning with the most recent.

1. Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison, W.Va., officially transitioned from a public, county-owned hospital to a community, non-profit entity. Now BMH has a 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service, which will make it easier for the hospital to raise funds.

2. Jersey City, N.J.-based LibertyHealth System plans to reopen Greenville Hospital in Jersey City as an outpatient medical center after closing the facility due to financial losses in 2008.

3. Sanford Health, based in Fargo, N.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D., is considering developing a pediatric clinic in China.

4. Cleveland Clinic and Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica announced a new business relationship in which ProMedica will join Cleveland Clinic's national Innovation Alliance network to commercialize medical innovations.

5. Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Mo., opened a new heart center and added two new cardiologists as part of an effort to attract patients to the hospital and prevent them from needing to travel to Columbia, Mo., for healthcare needs.

6. Cleveland Clinic and The Ohio State University in Columbus announced a new partnership to accelerate and commercialize medical innovations, such as medical devices, patient services, new medical software systems, consumer products and startup companies.

7. Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia formed a strategic affiliation with Chang'an Hospital in Xi'an, China, under which Fox Chase will provide support for management, treatment, technology and research.

8. A joint venture between HCA's Brentwood, Tenn.-based TriStar Health System and urgent care center chain CareSpot may bring as many as 15 urgent care centers to Tennessee in 2013.

9. Temple, Texas-based Scott & White Healthcare created a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to improving healthcare processes through Lean principles.

10. St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton, Mass., part of Boston-based Steward Health Care System, opened the region's first Orthodox Jewish visitor room as part of its strategy to become more culturally competent.
