8 Recent Medicare, Medicaid Issues

Here are eight issues dealing with Medicare or Medicaid that occurred in the past two weeks, starting with the most recent.

1. The Office of Inspector General released a report indicating CMS has not collected almost 80 percent of the Medicare overpayment amounts identified in a 30-month span of OIG audit reports.

2. The Illinois House and Senate approved a measure that would cut the state Medicaid program by $1.6 billion for the upcoming budget year.

3. Staffing company Jackson Healthcare's recent survey of several thousand physicians nationwide revealed that 36 percent of them are unable to accept new Medicaid patients due to declining reimbursements.

4. CMS approved a plan under the Massachusetts Medicaid program that will provide up to $628 million to seven safety-net hospitals in the state to help them transform the way they deliver care to low-income residents.

5. Investigators for U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) wrote a letter to Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson and asked for additional information regarding the state's Medicaid bills by May 29.

6. Last month, the Medicare Trustees released their annual report on Medicare expenditures, but the CMS Office of the Actuary released a memo last week saying the report is "clearly unrealistic" and offers an outlook that is too optimistic.

7. The Office of Inspector General released a report suggesting that Medicaid may be paying excessive rates to developmental centers in New York state for their services to patients with intellectual and developmental capabilities.

8. California Gov. Jerry Brown released an updated state budget proposal — California currently faces a $15.7 billion deficit for 2012-2013, up from its earlier estimate of $9.2 billion — and hospitals face roughly $280 million in cuts from Medi-Cal and other funding sources.
