Investigators for U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) wrote a letter to Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson and asked for additional information regarding the state's Medicaid bills by May 29, according to a Star Tribune report.
Minnesota allegedly overpaid Medicaid contractors to cover losses from state-sponsored public health programs. Investigators are looking to see if it is likely Minnesota is still overpaying health insurers for the Medicaid program.
State health officials who served under former Gov. Tim Pawlenty and through current Gov. Mark Dayton said they did nothing wrong. However, Gov. Dayton previously stated that some previous Medicaid contracts between the state and its managed care providers were "too generous with the taxpayers' money," according to the report.
Ms. Jesson said her department is working on responses for the congressional investigators. "We share their interest in assuring that taxpayer dollars are used wisely and that Minnesota works in tandem with the federal government in effective administration of this critical program," Ms. Jesson said in the report. "This includes reforms that have already saved hundreds of millions of dollars, as well as upcoming changes that will create incentives for better health outcomes."
