Here are the quarterly earnings of seven of the largest for-profit hospital operators that were released over the past week, starting with the most recent.
1. Net income attributable to Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America in the third quarter of 2011 was $61 million, down 75 percent from $243 million in net income reported in the same quarter of 2010.
2. Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems posted a net loss of $19.2 million in the first quarter of its 2012 fiscal year, compared to a net income of $1.2 million in the same quarter of 2011.
3. Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare's net income in the third quarter of 2011 was $6 million, down from the $932 million in net income reported in the same quarter of 2010.
4. Net income at Universal Health Services, based in King of Prussia, Pa., totaled $85 million in the third quarter of fiscal year 2011, a 53 percent jump from the same period last year.
5. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals reported net revenue of $877.2 million in the third quarter of its 2011 fiscal year, an increase of more than 5 percent from the third quarter of 2010, while its net income in the third quarter, $38.8 million, remained flat from 2010.
6. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems announced its 2011 third quarter financial results, which included net income of $74.3 million, an increase of 5.5 percent from the same quarter last year
7. Health Management Associates, based in Naples, Fla., reported net revenue of $1.4 billion in the third quarter of fiscal year 2011, up 12 percent from the same quarter last year, while net income attributable to HMA was $43.7 million, up 23.9 percent from the same quarter last year.
