Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems announced its 2011 third quarter financial results, which included net income of $74.3 million, an increase of 5.5 percent from the same quarter last year, according to a CHS news release.
Net operating revenue for the three months ended Sept. 30, 2011, was $3.4 billion, an 8.7 percent increase from the $3.2 billion recorded in the third quarter of 2010.
CHS' net income for the first nine months of 2011 was $171 million, down from $210.5 million recorded in the same nine-month span last year. However, net operating revenue for the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2011, totaled $10.2 billion, a 9.8 percent increase from the $9.3 billion recorded in the first nine months of 2010.
CHS President and CEO Wayne Smith said the health system's volumes have been "constrained by the macroeconomic environment," but the third quarter results and recent transactions indicate its "underlying strength of our operating model," according to the release.
