Eric Shinseki, secretary of Veterans Affairs, plans to visit the VA's $665 million medical center under construction in Orlando, Fla., to address its delayed opening, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.
VA officials extended the medical center's expected opening from this October to summer 2013 due to design errors, delays in acquiring equipment and undisclosed issues with the contractor.
U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) said VA officials postponed purchasing medical equipment in an effort to obtain the most up-to-date versions, according to the report. This postponement slowed the architects' ability to design the size of the rooms that would house the equipment.
