The McKesson Foundation recently awarded six research grants totaling $1.3 million as part of its Mobilizing for Health initiative, which aims to improve the health of underserved populations with chronic disease through the use of a mobile phone, according to a company news release.
Each $250,000 grant will support studies on diabetes care and management. The studies will examine a range of mobile-health technology options, including sending SMS text messages to patients reminding them to take their medications and comprehensive phone-based software programs that integrates with the patients' electronic medical records.
The grant recipients include physicians from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health in Baltimore, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Public Health Institute in Chicago and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
