Google AI lab can predict the structure of all proteins

Researchers at DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, have said they can predict the three-dimensional structure of nearly all known proteins using artificial intelligence, The Wall Street Journal reported July 28.

DeepMind said their AlphaFold database had been expanded to include 214 million proteins — nearly all the proteins currently known to scientists. Researchers hope this complete database can help expedite drug discovery.

"This is an incredible milestone––both for science and for AI, exemplifying its role as a tool for scientific discovery and truly at a scale never attempted before," Shrikanth Narayanan, PhD, a professor of engineering at the University of Southern California, told the Journal
