Almost half of health systems use AI to tackle workforce issues

Forty-seven percent of hospitals and health systems reported that they are turning to artificial intelligence to help alleviate staffing and labor insufficiencies, a March 15 survey from the Health Management Academy found. 

The Health Management Academy surveyed 40 executives from 40 leading health systems and found:

  • Almost half of all executives reported that they are using AI at their organizations to tackle workforce challenges.

  • Fifty-percent reported that their health system is currently evaluating or considering AI-based tools to combat workforce challenges.

  • Typical AI investments go toward back-office processes, clinical operations and clinical care.

  • Seventy-eight percent of executives reported that they are currently evaluating or considering AI-based tools for its revenue cycle management processes.

  • Twenty-seven percent of executives said they are using conversational AI at their health systems, while 72 percent said they are considering it.

  • Fifteen percent of executives said their health system is using AI for nursing.
