Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) is speaking out against a proposed teaching hospital in Mid-City, La., saying the project is too large and depends too heavily on uncertain funding, according to a WWLTV report.
The state is scheduled to start construction on the new LSU teaching hospital next Monday. Sen. Vitter says the $1.2 billion cost is too large and the hospital doubles the number of beds the state hospital currently uses in the downtown area. He expressed his concern in a letter sent Monday to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Sen. Vitter's stance comes in direct opposition to Gov. Bobby Jindal's push for the new hospital. State officials are asking HUD to back the financing or bond sale on the open market on around $270 million for the new hospital, believing HUD's guaranteed loan program will reduce some of the costs of development.
Responding to Sen. Vitter's concern that the hospital is too large, state facilities chief Jerry Jones said the size is warranted considering the needs of the region.
