Upstate University Hospital, which is affiliated with SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y., could take over Community General Hospital in Syracuse as early as July, according to a WSYR report.
The hospitals began exploring a merger six months ago. Community General lost approximately $2 million last year.
Community General was at one time affiliated with Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, but the affiliation ended in 2002.
Community General provides a growth opportunity for Upstate, which can no longer grow at its current location and is routinely at capacity, according to the report.
