Crouse Hospital and Community General Hospital, both in Syracuse, N.Y., are discussing a possible merger or collaboration, according to a report by the Post-Standard.
The two hospitals affiliated in 1999 but later ended their affiliation after the agreement failed to reduce costs, likely because the two facilities never combined clinical services, according to the report.
The two hospitals are reconsidering collaboration now in light of the increasing financial pressure on hospitals and a shrinking regional population, according to the report.
Crouse Hospital filed for bankruptcy in 2001, but has been profitable since then. Community General, however, lost money in both 2007 and 2008.
Specific proposals regarding the agreement have yet to be considered.
