The American Hospital Association has voiced support for a new proposal from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where CMS would pre-pay a portion of future shared savings through monthly installments to increase provider participation in accountable care organizations, according to an AHA News Now report.
The AHA is urging the agency to couple this pre-payment initiative with additional grants as well. The association said ACO formation will require significant upfront investment, particularly for small or rural hospitals.
The AHA also said while advanced payments and grants may make the Medicare Shared Savings Program more attractive, significant improvements to the proposed are "necessary to make the program attractive and operationally viable," according to the report.
