Cigna, Jefferson Health split

Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health has informed patients that the system is out-of-network with Cigna commercial plans, as of March 15.

The health system said it and the insurer continue to negotiate, according to a message on Jefferson Health's website.

Cigna's reimbursement rates have not kept pace with inflationary pressure, Edmund Pribitikin, MD, chief physician executive and president of Jefferson Medical Group, said in a recorded statement.

"Cigna's reimbursement rates for commercial members have failed to keep pace with these economic realities, making it difficult to sustain high-quality care," he said.

In a statement shared with Becker's, a Cigna Healthcare spokesperson said Jefferson Health "chose to leave our network due to their unreasonable rate hike demands."

"Almost all our employer clients' benefits plans are self-funded, which means any increase in cost of care is paid directly by local employers, their employees and their families," the spokesperson said. "We will continue to negotiate with Jefferson Health to reach a fair agreement that will keep healthcare affordable for patients."

Emergency services at Jefferson Health are still in-network for Cigna members, according to the health system. Some members may qualify for transition-of-care programs or out-of-network benefits.
