The following acquisitions or mergers took place within the last two weeks.
1. Arlington, Texas-based Texas Health Resources acquired MedicalEdge Healthcare Group, one of the largest independent physician practice groups in North Texas. Texas Health's acquisition of the group will allow it to become a "'medical home' for thousands of North Texas Patients," according to Douglas D. Hawthorne, FACHE, CEO of Texas Health Resources. MedicalEdge features 250 locations and employs more than 420 physicians and physician extenders.
2. Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) General Hospital, part of the Wyoming Valley Health Care System, acquired Intermountain Medical Group, a multispecialty practice. As part of the deal, the practice's 52 physicians will become part of the health system. Wilkes-Barre will take over the group's nearly 30 locations, including its diagnostic imaging center, diagnostic lab, physical therapy center and sleep lab.
3. Appleton (Wisc.) Cardiology Associates integrated with Appleton-based ThedaCare, effective Dec. 31, 2010. As part of the deal, ThedaCare acquires ACA's assets and will employ the practice's 16 physicians, seven nurse practitioners and physician assistants and 110 staff members.
4. Ann Arbor, Mich.-based St. Joseph Mercy Health System completed its acquisition of Michigan Heart, a cardiology practice based in Superior Township, Mich. St. Joseph has said it will retain all employees from the 33-physician practice, which has eight locations.
5. Heart and Vascular Institute of Florida South in St. Petersburg, Fla., merged with Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. The deal will expand Northside's Tampa Bay Heart Institute. Heart and Vascular Institute's 16 physicians and 100 employees become part of Tampa Bay Heart.
6. Family Medicine Clinic of Sibley, Iowa, joined the Avera Medical Group network and is now owned by Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, both in Sioux Falls, S.D. The transaction went into effect Jan. 1. The new name of the clinic is Avera Medical Group, Sibley. The clinic, which is owned by two physicians and employs another physician, provides primary care, family practice and obstetrical services.
7. Greater Cincinnati Associated Physicians is splitting up, with physicians negotiating or joining two different healthcare systems and a handful remaining in private practice. Five GCAP physicians will join TriHealth, a hospital networked based in Cincinnati. Four physicians will remain in private practice while 26 others are negotiating with Mercy Health Partners, a seven-hospital system in northwest Ohio and southwest Michigan. TriHealth and Mercy are two of the largest healthcare systems in the region.
8. Raleigh, N.C.-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals has added three physician practices to its physician practices division. Physician practices joining WakeMed include Carolina Cardiology Consultants, Holly Springs Medical Group and North Wake Cardiovascular Center.
9. New Bern, N.C.-based CarolinaEast Health System acquired East Carolina Internal Medicine based in Pollocksville, N.C., on Jan. 1. ECIM is now CarolinaEast Internal Medicine and employes more than 350 physicians and staff, bringing the health system to more than 2,100 employees.
