Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health System laid off 54 employees yesterday, according to a Beacon Journal report.
The workforce reduction is expected to save roughly $4.5 million, according to the report. Layoffs affected clinical and non-clinical staff but not registered nurses who provide bedside care.
Summa Health is also saving another $8.2 million by not filling certain open positions, according to the report.
The system, which employs about 11,000 people, attributed the layoffs to declining revenues and changes under healthcare reform. The system is also in the midst of a 10-year performance improvement plan that was initiated in 2011 to reduce expenses by about $966 million.
