Nurses, Management Reach Tentative Agreement at 2 NY Hospitals; Avoid Strikes

The nurses' union and two New York City hospitals have reached tentative agreements for labor contracts and avoided strikes, according to a New York Times report.

St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and the New York State Nurses Association reached a tentative deal, under which nurses would start sharing the cost of their healthcare premiums and management would begin to contribute to a brand-name drug plan for nurses and families with serious illnesses. Nurses would also see a total 8 percent increase in wages over the next three years in addition to a $1,500 payment to nurses who worked without a contract for the past year.

St. Luke's-Roosevelt nurses are scheduled to vote on the tentative deal Jan.4-5. Details of the tentative deal reached between NYSNA and Mount Sinai Medical Center were not disclosed.

St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Mount Sinai Medical Center were joined by two other New York City hospitals in a coordinated strike that would have taken place during the holidays.  NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital nurses recently ratified their new contracts. Montefiore Medical Center and nurses have been unable to agree on staffing levels.
