Miami-Dade County's Jackson Health is preparing labor negotiations with Jackson's four labor unions as contracts with the unions will expire on Sept. 30, according to a Miami Herald report.
Jackson's CEO Carlos Migoya has recommended the hospital board spend up to $275,000 to hire attorneys from Coral Cables-based law firm Allen, Norton & Blue to oversee the negotiations. The board would not consider other firms under Mr. Migoya's recommendation due to time constraints.
Jackson will be aiming to reduce its labor costs through negotiations. The hospital spends about 55 percent of its total operating costs on labor, while other successful hospitals average 40 percent, according to the report.
A representative from SEIU Local 1991 called the law firm "unionbusters" and said the health system has many inefficiencies , making it "unfair to continue hammering labor," according to the report.
