Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, N.M., laid off 39 employees yesterday, according to an El Paso Times report.
The board of directors for the 99-bed hospital, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last August, attributed the layoffs to declining patient volumes and reimbursement.
Layoffs affected several departments, including clinical staff and administration, but no physicians were laid off. A hospital spokesperson also said there are about 20 unfilled positions for which laid-off employees can apply.
