Trenton, N.J.-based Capital Health will lay off approximately 175 employees between its two hospitals in Trenton and Pennington, N.J., according to a Times of Trenton report.
Capital Health includes Capital Health Regional Medical Center and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell, which opened in Pennington in November 2011.
Executives said the layoffs are part of a restructuring effort to better balance staffing needs, according to the report. The system increased its hiring last year when the 223-bed Hopewell facility was nearing completion, but management said it now has a better idea of how many employees are needed to handle the hospital's patient volume.
A system spokesperson said workers affected by the layoffs were in finance, management and technical areas of the system. Physicians, nurses and other staff members involved in patient care were largely unaffected, although some supervisory nurses may be laid off, according to the report.
