Approximately 250 nurses' aides were laid off from Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., last week after the hospital hired a private company to provide aides, according to a Journal News report.
The laid-off aides rallied outside of the Westchester County Office Building to protest the job losses. Many said they were fired with little notification to make way for MSN, a private company that will provide nurses' aides, according to the report.
MSN's staffing is expected to save $4 million to $5 million each year, according to the report, but nurses say the incoming aides are less qualified with lower salaries. The hospital contended that notion, saying it's worked with MSN for more than 20 years and only hires certified staff.
