11 Recent Hospital and Health System Layoffs

The following hospital and/or health system job eliminations were announced or implemented within the past month. They are listed by the number of employees or positions affected.  

1. Knapp Medical Center in Texas Cuts 50 Positions
Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas, laid off about 50 employees — a workforce reduction that comes one month after its acquisition by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare.

2. Franklin Community Health in Maine to Cut up to 40 Jobs

Franklin Community Health Network in Farmington, Maine, announced plans to cut 35 to 40 positions from its 850-employee workforce due to growing financial losses.

3. Cheshire Medical Center in New Hampshire to Cut 34 Jobs
Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene (N.H.) cut 34 jobs. The 169-bed hospital and multispecialty group will not fill 22 vacant positions and will lay off 13 people, according to the report.

4. Clearfield Hospital in Pennsylvania to Cut 25 Positions
Clearfield (Pa.) Hospital is reducing its workforce by 25 clinical, support and management positions due to financial pressures and declining reimbursement.

5. Huggins Hospital in New Hampshire to Cut, Freeze Jobs
Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, N.H., is eliminating 23.5 full-time-equivalent jobs, not filling eight open positions and reducing hours for eight other employees.

6. Mendocino Coast Hospital in California Cuts 20 Jobs
Mendocino Coast District Hospital in Fort Bragg, Calif., eliminated 20 positions from its workforce.

7. Corcoran District Hospital in California Lays Off 19 Employees
Corcoran (Calif.) District Hospital laid off 19 employees, including some executives, managers and hourly staff.

8. Aultman Hospital, Mercy Medical Center to Cut 18 Combined Jobs
Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center, both in Canton, Ohio, announced plans to cut jobs. Aultman Hospital is cutting its alternative daily living department, effective March 8, which will affect 17 employees. Mercy Medical Center will no longer offer its hyperbaric oxygen treatment, starting Feb. 28. The change affects one employee.

9. Grace Cottage Hospital in Vermont Lays Off 15 Employees
Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, Vt., laid off 15 employees yesterday, citing declining reimbursements and the Affordable Care Act.

10. Silverton Hospital in Oregon Lays Off 9 Employees
Silverton (Ore.) Hospital closed its catheterization lab and laid off nine employees.

11. Layoffs Pending for LifePoint Hospitals
Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals announced plans to cut an unspecified number of jobs after its 2013 earnings outlook fell below analysts' estimates.
