Silverton (Ore.) Hospital has closed its catheterization lab and laid off nine employees, according to a Statesman Journal report.
The hospital's cath lab opened in early 2011. A hospital spokesperson attributed its closure to low volume, according to the report. "People aren't really using cath labs anymore because there are really good medications you can take, or insurance [companies] are now requiring that a patient take those medications prior to having a stent or going to the cath lab," hospital spokesperson Rita Kester said in the report.
The cath lab's closure resulted in the layoffs of three lab nurses and two technicians.
Ms. Kester said the hospital will also begin outsourcing its marketing, according to the report. The closure of Silverton's marketing department resulted in four layoffs.
