Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence, La., part of Baton Rouge, La.-based LSU Health Care Services Division, may have to close its oncology unit due to steep budget cuts, according to an Advocate report.
In July, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced it would cut $859.2 million from the state Medicaid program due to diminished federal Medicaid funds. This reduction led the LSU Board of Supervisors to cut $14 million in funding for Lallie Kemp — one-third of the hospital's annual funding, according to the report.
The loss of funding may force Lallie Kemp to close the oncology unit if it cannot find oncologists to provide cancer services to the hospital's large Medicaid population. The hospital is currently seeking alternatives to allow its cancer patients to continue receiving treatment close to home, according to the report.
