Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network has partnered with The Wistar Institute, a biomedical research group in Philadelphia, to advance cancer research, according to a Morning Call report.
LVHN and Wistar will share research information and patients' tumor tissue samples if the patients consent. The researchers at Wistar will study the cancer cells over time, which they hope will lead to more precise treatments tailored to individuals' genetic makeup.
The health system and research institute have already begun a project on resistance to therapy in advanced melanoma. They are planning a second study that will assess how genetic differences affect immune response to ovarian cancer. Future projects may focus on brain tumors and pancreatic and lung cancer, according to the report.
