Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health announced the collaboration of its Avera Cancer Institute with the Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
The two organizations will form a new regional Breast Cancer Network & Collaborative Registry that will collate patient information and tissue samples to improve the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors, people identified as being at high risk for breast cancer and people with an immediate family member with breast cancer will be invited to become part of the database.
The network and BCCR aim to help researchers and clinicians identify risk factors for developing breast cancer, factors that affect survival and the impact of different treatments on the quality of life of survivors. Some planned projects of the BCCR include whole genome analysis to help physicians individualize treatment recommendations for their patients, an e-Breast Cancer Registry to provide patients personalized cancer prevention information, an e-Breast Cancer Conference to review patient cases and an e-Breast Cancer Consultation to review cases submitted by oncologists.
