Patricia Maryland, DrPH, has served as president and CEO of Warren, Mich.-based St. John Providence Health System since January 2008. Dr. Maryland also serves as Michigan's ministry market leader for St. Louis-based Ascension Health.
Dr. Maryland is no stranger to serving dual roles: Prior to taking on her current positions, she served as president of St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and as executive vice president and COO of St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis.
Throughout her more than 30 years in healthcare, Dr. Maryland has gained experience in strategic planning, patient care operations, service line management, finance and clinical program development. Now, at SJPHS, she is putting that expertise to work. For example, she is helping facilitate the expansion of the neonatal intensive care unit at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.
Along her path to the top of SJPHS, Dr. Maryland has been influenced and guided by role models, and she now encourages up-and-coming female healthcare leaders to find role models of their own. "Choose your role models wisely and for the right reasons. Look for substance and integrity," she said in Becker's Hospital Review. "And remember, your role models don't have to be exactly like you. Some of the most influential role models in my life have been white males."
Dr. Maryland has received national recognition for her history of excellent leadership. In 2012, Becker's Hospital Review named her on its list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know and its list of 120 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know.
