L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, has served as CEO of Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital since Sept. 1, 2012. He also serves as vice president for health systems of Stony Brook Medicine.
Prior to joining Stony Brook, Dr. Pasternak served as CEO of Inova Fairfax Hospital Campus in Falls Church, Va., a position he held for four years. Prior to that, he served as executive vice president and CMO of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati.
Dr. Pasternak took the helm at SBUH in a relatively turbulent time in healthcare, as the hospital is working to evolve to survive under healthcare reform. Currently, Dr. Pasternak is helping implement strategy at SBUH to guide it towards the new model of healthcare — providing coordinated, high-quality, low-cost care. "We are working together in a fully coordinated manner to proactively form relationships with other hospitals and physician groups to develop a network of institutions with one shared mission," he said in the December edition of his monthly CEO message. "These efforts will lead to a time in the near future when Stony Brook will be part of a system of hospitals and physicians that spreads over a wide area of Suffolk County."
In recognition of his years of strong healthcare leadership, Becker's Hospital Review named Dr. Pasternak to its 2012 list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know.
Dr. Pasternak earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. He also earned a masters of public health degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a MBA from Loyola College of Maryland in Baltimore.
