The New York eHealth Collaborative and the New York State Department of Health have announced that three regional health information organizations and three health information exchange vendors will participate in the Statewide Health Information Network of New York, or "SHIN-NY," to unify state HIE initiatives, making electronic health records more secure and accessible to healthcare providers statewide.
The participating RHIOs include Brooklyn Health Information Exchange, e-Health Network of Long Island and Taconic Health Information Network and Community. The participating HIE vendors include HealthUnity, IBM and InterSystems.
Brooklyn Health Information Exchange, e-Health Network of Long Island and THINC are connecting their databases and infrastructure to improve the care of the patients they serve and promote statewide health, according to the report. HealthUnity, IBM and InterSystems have entered into strategic contracts with NYeC to leverage their product suites towards the further development of the SHIN-NY, and have agreed to standardize software to permit safe and efficient interoperability and to adhere to New York Statewide Policy Guidance.
According to the report, the initial capability of SHIN-NY will be a Patient Record Look Up, which will allow providers to search across databases to find health records relevant to their patient. The next function will deploy Direct Exchange, which works like email, where providers can query each other while collaborating on patient care.
