Communications and IT company Harris Corp. and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration have created a secure email service that allows healthcare providers to exchange health information electronically with other providers — the first feature of Florida's statewide health information exchange, according to a Harris news release.
This Direct Secure Messaging service meets several information-sharing requirements of meaningful use, such as sharing summary of care records for patients referred or transitioned to another provider. DSM aims to replace fax machines for referrals and the transmission of patient data between organizations.
Harris plans to develop a Patient Look-up service this fall to allow physicians to search for and access individual patient records from participating organizations in the HIE. At least 20 organizations will be part of the HIE by 2014.
Harris has a four-year, $19 million contract to develop Florida's HIE.
