Suffolk, Va.-based Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System announced that it is notifying patients of a data breach that occurred at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Va.
The health system discovered two employees accessed patients' medical records at the hospital in a manner that was not within the scope of their job functions. The records contained patient names, dates of birth, treatment information, provider names and internal hospital medical record and account numbers, which may have included Social Security numbers.
According to a Health IT Security report, 5,000 patients may be affected by the breach. The health system is working with Kroll Advisory Solutions to offer identity theft management services.
