AHA Supports Extension of Stark Law, Antikickback Safe Harbors for Health IT

The American Hospital Association has voiced support for extending federal Stark and antikickback protections for hospitals that want to help physicians adopt health IT, and has also urged the HHS to make the protections permanent, according to an AHA News Now report.

In comments submitted to the HHS' Office of Inspector General and CMS, the AHA supported the proposed rule that would extend the protections to 2016. It also recommended that the rule continue to explicitly include hospitals and health systems within the scope of donors protected, and the OIG and CMS should remove a confusing statement about covered technology from the preamble.
