UCSF Health receives $5M gift to develop AI monitoring platform

San Francisco-based UCSF Health and the UCSF Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation received a $5 million gift to develop an automated artificial intelligence monitoring platform for clinical care.

The platform, called The Impact Monitoring Platform for AI in Clinical Care, will aim to bridge the gap between new AI technologies used by clinicians and the need for regular, thorough checks to ensure they work well, are safe and are fair, according to a May 29 news release from UCSF.

Additionally, the platform will be used to help healthcare leaders decide whether to scale, refine or discontinue AI tools by reporting on their effectiveness, need for improvement and potential risks, including dangers or health disparities. After development and testing, it will be piloted at UCSF Health with a set of current AI tools.

Julia Adler-Milstein, PhD, head of the UCSF Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation, and Sara Murray, MD, chief health AI officer at UCSF Health, will spearhead this initiative.
