The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a measure that would reduce the salary cap of federally funded biomedical researchers from $199,700 per year to $165,300, a 17 percent drop, according to a Nature News report.
David Moore, senior director for governmental relations at the Association of American Medical Colleges, said in the report the proposal could deeply impact medical schools and teaching hospitals, as they would be responsible for millions of dollars in compensation to keep the researchers' salaries the same.
The spending bill would affect any scientists, physicians or researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others within the Department of Health and Human Services, according to the report. While the House bill would reduce researchers' salaries to 2000 levels, a similar Senate bill does not alter the salary cap.
The House and Senate versions must match before a final HHS spending bill can be passed for the 2012 fiscal year.
