Pay for 18 Connecticut Hospital Execs Exceeds $1M in 2012

Eighteen various Connecticut hospital executives earned at least $1 million in total pay in fiscal year 2012, and Thomas Pipicelli, former CEO of The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, earned the most at $3.36 million, according to a report from the Connecticut Office of Health Care Access.

The report, released this month and based on FY 2012 data, includes the most up-to-date executive compensation figures for Connecticut's 30 acute-care hospitals. Most of Mr. Pipicelli's compensation came in the form of "fringe benefits," or compensation from his pension plan and other compensation means.

Of the 18 millionaire hospital executives, 10 were presidents and CEOs, including Mr. Pipicelli. That total is one more than 2011, when nine CEOs earned at least $1 million. The other nine CEOs who earned at least $1 million last year include:

•    Marna Borgstrom, Yale-New Haven Hospital: $2.59 million
•    Susan Davis, RN, Saint Vincent's Medical Center: $2.39 million
•    Christopher O'Connor, Hospital of Saint Raphael: $1.80 million
•    Brian Grissler, Stamford Hospital: $1.53 million
•    Frank Corvino, Greenwich Hospital: $1.53 million
•    Chris Dadlez, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center: $1.52 million
•    Clarence Silvia, The Hospital of Central Connecticut: $1.50 million
•    William Jennings, Bridgeport Hospital: $1.10 million
•    Vincent Capece Jr., Middlesex Hospital: $1.02 million

James Staten, CFO of Yale-New Haven Hospital, again was the highest-paid hospital CFO in the state. He earned $1.43 million in 2012, roughly $700,000 more than 2011. Thomas Marchozzi, CFO of Hartford Hospital, was the next highest-paid CFO at $783,046.
