In fiscal years 2010 and 2011, most top officials at Montana-based hospitals and health systems received salary raises and bonuses as most other salaries and wages in the state and country continued to stagnate, according to a Missoulian report.
Seven of the nine hospital CEOs looked at in the report earned bonuses, and total compensation among eight of the hospital system CEOs ranged from $273,800 to $769,000. John Goodnow, CEO of Benefis Health System in Great Falls, Mont., received $1.9 million last year with a $477,300 salary, $188,300 in bonuses and $1.23 million as "other" compensation. Benefis officials said the high amount of "other" compensation reflects one-time payouts of deferred compensation and retirement payments from prior years, according to the report.
The salary totals for the executives puts them in the top 0.5 percent of the income bracket in Montana, and officials at all hospital systems said the compensation levels are required to "attract and maintain top executives," according to the report.
