Eighteen executives across Connecticut's 30 hospitals received more than $1 million in total compensation in 2010, and seven of those 18 have since retired or are currently retiring from their roles, according to a report from The Hartford Courant and the Connecticut Health I-Team.
John Meehan, outgoing CEO of Hartford (Conn.) Hospital, was the highest-paid hospital executive in the state, according to the report. His compensation reached $6.98 million, with nearly $5.9 million of that total coming in nontaxable and retirement benefits.
The median compensation total of the highest-paid position at every Connecticut hospital was $678,000. Peter Herbert, MD, chief of staff and senior vice president for medical affairs at Yale-New Haven Hospital, was the second-highest-paid hospital executive in Connecticut, earning roughly $3.55 million in 2010.
