Most Critical Access Hospital CEOs in Maine Earn $230k-$330k

Maine has nine critical access hospitals throughout the state, and most CEOs of those hospitals have an average annual compensation between $230,000 and $330,000, according to a Sun Journal report.

The major exception was Richard Willett, CEO of Skowhegan, Maine-based Redington-Fairview General Hospital, who made nearly $550,000 in 2010. In 2009, Mr. Willett earned $693,000.

The Sun Journal tracked several other compensation-related items for CAHs in Maine, including the following:

•    Excluding Mr. Willett's compensation, the average CEO compensation for the other eight CAHs totaled $295,000.

•    Executive perquisites still exist for many CEOs at Maine CAHs. Car allowances, fitness club memberships and "companion" travel were some of the perquisites mentioned. David Shannon, CEO of Lincoln, Maine-based Penobscot Valley Hospital, received a $7,260 car allowance in 2010. PVH CFO Ann Marie Rush received a car allowance for $3,600.

•    A majority of the CAHs had "greater-than-average" spending on advertising, conferences and travel. For example, Redington-Fairview, Bridgton (Maine) Hospital, Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Sebasticook Valley Health in Pittsfield, Maine, all spent more than $300,000 each for those categories, according to the report.

The high compensation amounts for CAH CEOs in the state, however, have caused residents and legislators alike some consternation. "You look at some of these, especially these major hospitals, that obviously claim to be a non-profit, but you look at their building and what they keep on adding to and you see what they pay their CEOs, and their standards as non-profits are kind of questionable at times," said Rep. Michael Celli (R-Brewer) in the report. "The services that they're using are being paid for by the ordinary tax-paying citizen[s] living in their homes."
