Hospital CEO salaries at three of the four acute-care hospitals in Erie County, Pa., have been declining since 2008, according an Erie Times-News report.
Erie, Pa.-based Saint Vincent Health Center's former CEO Angela Bontempo earned $944,575 in 2008-09, and that figured dropped to $701,775 in 2009-10. Saint Vincent implemented a wage freeze in 2009 to avoid losing money, the report said.
CEO John Malone of UPMC Hamot, also in Erie, earned $796,311 in 2007-08 before his compensation fell to $562,572 in 2008-09. He received an uptick in compensation to $591,823 in 2009-10. The report said UPMC Hamot earned a net profit in 2008-09, but it came at the expense of layoffs and halted merit raises.
Corry (Pa.) Memorial Hospital CEO Barb Nichols' salary-and-benefits package went from $182,885 in 2008-09 to $157,093 in 2009-10. Corry Memorial laid off the equivalent of 22 full-time employees in 2009, and other employees who earned more than $9 an hour had to take a 3 percent pay cut.
According to the report, the only CEO in the county who saw an overall increase in salary over the past few years was Mary Eckert at Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Pa. Her compensation went from $341,364 in 2007-08 to $465,214 in 2009-10.
