In 2011, the average salary of an independent hospital general counsel was 57 percent of the CEO's salary, according to a report from Integrated Healthcare Strategies.
That total represents a significant jump compared with 2002, when the average independent hospital general counsel salary was 50 percent of the CEO's salary, according to the report. At health systems between 2002 and 2011, general counsel salaries increased from 45 percent to 48 percent of the CEO's salary, according to the report.
An increased focus on legal issues such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute reviews, False Claims Act reviews and RAC audits is one of the main driving factors for the increased compensation of hospital and health system general counsels.
