In a 15 to 5 decision, the board of trustees at Fayetteville, N.C.-based Cape Fear Valley Health System voted to give CEO Mike Nagowski a 2 percent salary raise to $534,732 and an incentive bonus worth $189,669, according to a Fayetteville Observer report.
The board of trustees also unanimously voted to award Mr. Nagowski a five-year contract extension, according to the report.
CMS and state investigators have heavily scrutinized Cape Fear Valley over the past year for issues ranging from patient safety to wrongful death lawsuits. The health system risked losing its Medicare status for the fifth time after state regulators, on behalf of CMS, found the hospital's policies on telemetry were inadequate.
CMS approved Cape Fear Valley's corrective action plan in January, and the health system still receives Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.
